Big is Good...Bigger is Better!

You may have noticed that we fairly recently introduced a new product, our 48" x 48" patchwork blankets, which have been very popular as presents for special keiki.

The beauty pictured below just came in and is a bigger version. The blanket shown is 77" by 59" (about 6.5' x 5'). All the larger size patchwork blankets are going to be slightly different sizes depending on the backing fabric that our fearless designer can find on her hunting missions. However, they should all fit nicely on a queen size bed...

Late Trading Hours

Hi Everyone,

For the rest of 2011, Muumuu Heaven will be open until 8pm on Thursday nights. We're starting this week (11/3) and will keep it going through the rest of the year. The only exception is that we are CLOSED on Thanksgiving Day, which is Thursday, 11/24.

We'll have special little things happening during these late trading Thursdays...we might come up with a promotion to go a long with the fabulous farmer's market in Kailua on Thursday nights, or get a special guest appearance...musical or otherwise, you never know.

Whatever happens, we are definitely going to turn the music up and have some fun as we fast approach the "silly season!!" AHHHHHHHHH.....

We are so excited to dress Hawaiian music singer Raiatea Helm in her many shows and events that take her all over the world. Check out the photo from a recent performance at a Benefit Dinner and Concert at the Waikiki Edition with Chef Morimoto. They helped raise over $125,000 in relief for Japan :) Raiatea is looking lovely in a Kiko Papa style dress and supporting our Japanese friends, family and fans. We ♥ it!

We are geared up for an awesome weekend and hope you can join us. Dianna Cohen, artist and environmental activist, local kids concerned about plastic pollution and Muumuu Heaven Angels will be creating a mural wall made from plastic rubbish collected from the Surfrider Foundation Oahu Chapter's beach cleanup in Waimanalo last weekend.

Come by Saturday (3.19) at 10am to participate or watch the creation unfold. Stick around for a reception for the plastic mural and other related art pieces from 6-8pm. Pupu from Town restaurant, refreshments, environmentally inspired art and your good company will make for a fun and inspiring evening. Be fantastic, don't use plastic!

Artist Statement
With imagery inspired by friends, family, history and pop culture, I try to evoke a mood of various bygone eras. My philosophy with regard to painting is to reduce a scene to its light and dark rudiments thereby revealing the essence of the subject matter. These latest paintings represent the current evolution of my process.

Light is significant only in relation to darkness. It is this dichotomy, this opposition, which drives my painting style. David Kelly, the contemporary American philosopher wrote: "Bright lights cast dark shadows when shone only from one direction." This high contrast between light and dark allows me to strip an object of any superfluous information.

I deconstruct figures and scenes, analyzing their essential features, those attributes that are the essence of their physical presence and recreate what I believe to be the simplest core of their corporeal being. The scenes I paint allude to an event, some occurrence that may be clear, may be off in the distance, or may merely be a thought the subject I am painting is having at the time. Nevertheless, I strive to capture this mood in every piece I do.

Reflection is a by product of the process of painting on the back of glass. The glass acts as a sort of mirror. When light reflects off of my paintings, they take on an entirely new characteristic by which the setting they are in becomes part of the art. Further, the innate reflective property brings the viewer from a passive role to an active role in the work. One can look at the piece and see the image that I have created, but also see themselves staring back.

We are pleased to announce that on Saturday, November 6, 2010, Plastic Pollution Coalition will host TEDxGreatPacificGarbagePatch: The Global Plastic Pollution Crisis, in Santa Monica, California, at the Annenberg Community Beach House.

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events where people share big ideas and become inspired. Although independently organized, all TEDx events follow the spirit of TED conferences. TEDxGreatPacificGarbagePatch is a one-day event that will bring together global thought leaders from the fields of technology, science, arts and entertainment, design, community activism and business in a dialog on the theme of "The Global Plastic Pollution Crisis".

In the past few years the world has taken notice of the Garbage Patch in the Pacific Ocean, a gyre of trash estimated to be at a minimum the size of the state of Texas and possibly as large at the United States. 90% of this trash patch is comprised of plastic. And there are similar areas of plastic pollution throughout the world - in all the world's oceans, in seemingly unlikely places like the Arabian Desert, along some of the most pristine beaches of the world, in our cities, in our rivers, and in our bodies. Plastic pollution affects every one of us.

TEDxGreatPacificGarbagePatch is a forum where issue experts, youth leaders, visual and performing artists, actors, musicians, politicians and many others will share observations on how plastic pollution affects ocean/environmental health and public health; explore solutions for reducing our plastic footprint, and begin to develop ideas about eliminating plastic pollution through individual action as well as public- and private-sector innovation.

In a commitment to keep a low carbon footprint, and to encourage and empower global engagement and action, this important event will be streamed live to locations around the world. A live webcast of the event will be available on the day of the event through the website.

'Our Public School' Update

Just over one year ago, we held an event at Mu‘umu‘u Heaven to introduce a great new non-profit called Our Public School.

This group was formed to help share best practices in education from across the country.

Here's a quick update from them...we've only included some of their recent accomplishments. Don't forget to check their website for all the details. ALOHA

{This is an exciting time for Our Public School, which is now progressing by the day. In the past 6 weeks alone, Our Public School has done the following:

-Created a Youtube Channel which includes our first 4 Best Practice Videos in Hawai‘i and collectively have over 1,100 views.
-Launched two social media campaigns with the purpose of engaging the public in our schools.
-Launched an in depth FB and twitter strategy which includes a new statistic on education each day and a featured best practice of the week.
-We launched Maya Soetoro-Ng's Facebook page which will include Our Public School's news and updates}

Daisuke Takahashi is an amazing athlete and a true hero in Japan!

He won the bronze medal in figure skating at the 2010 Winter Olympics then the gold medal at the 2010 World Championships of figure skating. He came into the shop because he wanted to get nice dress for his mom and had a blast with the Mu‘umu‘u Heaven angels!

Today we have a special guest with Kimberly Ruchaber of Kyote Designs at the store with her jewelry line. Her line is a created with upcycled materials - copper from construction sites, vintage coins, and recycled silver - combined with gemstones to create one of a kind pieces of jewelry.

Also, the nice folks from Lomilomi Hanalima will be on hand offering massage by the minute. We'll have pupu's and refreshments as well...

If you were lucky enough to catch the Kokua Festival at the Waikiki Shell (4/23 and 4/24) then you hopefully saw the traveling Mu‘umu‘u Heaven circus...and our pig with wings.

Yep, pig with wings (as in...when pigs fly...). We asked folks to try to name our little mascot and offered a prize for the best one. We had TWO identical entries. What an awesome name! PIGASUS

The winners receive a 2010 Kokua Festival poster and very nice Kokua Festival tote bag...congrats!

The focus of this show will be images inspired by two things: mannequins from the 50's and 60's and images of her own mother. Jill's images evoke a nostalgia and affection for the era from 40's- the 60's.

Jill is calling this exhibition "Vintage Girls" and we're excited to share it with you all. Jill Butterbaugh graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Hawaii. She is married with 3 sons and has been living and painting in Hawaii since 1979.

Aloha Everyone,

You may have noticed that we've been changing our store window displays since we've expanded with a new notion and artwork every month. First was PEACE, then LOVE, then SMILE and now for April it's KOKUA.

Kokua means mutual assistance, or pitching in, or helping out...

As we started getting the job done this morning, we had encouragement from folks at the bus stop, our retail neighbors and passerbys. Then we even had some real KOKUA by a young girl who just happened to be visiting our store and wanted to help with some painting (see video)...gives me goose-bumps!

Also this month, the Kokua Festival goes off on April 23 and 24 at the Waikiki Shell in support of the awesome Kokua Foundation. Check out more details here - www.kokuafestival.com

So, our friend in NYC - let's call her Moira (that's actually her real name...love you honey!) called us the other day to say she saw one of our dresses in Elle. She knew before reading the caption that it was Mu‘umu‘u Heaven. She was right!!

We had so much fun with Mario (the Jet-setting, Editor-at-Large) from Elle when he was visiting...

Also of note is a nice mention for our fave restaurant in town...TOWN. Whoo hoo!

Mu‘umu‘u Heaven is getting bigger. In September, we opened our very first store outside of Hawaii - in Shichirigahama, Japan. Now, construction continues here in Kailua.

A new look to a familiar face, the additions and renovations to our existing store on Kailua Rd. are near completion and we are almost ready to move in.

We’re excited to show you all the new space and to bring you a little more heaven. Keep an eye out for Mu‘umu‘u Heaven’s unveiling. Aloha!

The award was presented during a luncheon at The Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort and Spa.

Next week we are kicking off a multi-week exhibition at luxury department store, Parco, in Tokyo's high-energy district of Shibuya. They are replicating our Kailua boutique in Tokyo for a limited time as part of a big Summer Surf event. We'll be there for a big reception kick off on July 10 at 7pm...can't wait!

Hi Everyone,

We've got lots of fun stuff happening this month...this week we're showing a brand new style arriving just in time for your special Easter brunch or family outing. We'll be closed Easter Sunday and then back to normal hours on Monday. The new style is easy to wear and is a real head-turner.

Because Easter falls on Second Sunday, we're celebrating Kailua's Art Walk on Sunday, April 19th. This month we're so excited to be showing the works of Kailua's own, Colin Redican. If you haven't seen his work yet, we think you're going to flip!!

We're starting an Earth Day celebration early with our "week-long colors of the Rainbow sale." For seven straight days, starting April 16th, our one-of-a-kind clothing will be 20% off - one color of the rainbow for every day (4/16 - RED, 4/17 - ORANGE, etc...). This culminates with 20% off all our clothing on Earth Day, April 22nd.

Finally, we have Kailua Day on April 26th. Last year there were over 10,000 attendees and lots of family fun...more details to follow. ALOHA!!

Book Signings - Cynthia Derosier & Clark Little

It's a book signing weekend! Just in time for last minute Chrissy gifts...These two very talented artists will be at Mu'umu'u Heaven to personally sign their very cool books.

First, on December 20th from 3-5pm Cynthia Derosier will be signing copies of "The Surfer Spirit" and "The Survivor Spirit ~ The Beauty, Passion, & Power of Breast Cancer Survivors" both of which have 5-star ratings of Amazon.com. She is well know around town for creating inspirational books and supporting worthy causes. We were lucky enough to meet her at an executive meeting of the Surfrider Foundation. Her company is called "Good Juju" - How cool is that!!

Then, on December 21st from 2-4pm North Shore photographer Clark Little will be autographing copies of "Visions of Amazing Waves." In this beautiful coffee table book, Clark has the front cover, inside back cover and multiple pages inside. This is a huge honor for any photographer, as this book is a MUST HAVE and huge seller in Australia. Your surfer dude or dudette will smooch you on Christmas morning for this one!

We had a great time at Jocelyn's art opening on Friday night. Good people, great art and plenty of...fun! Special thanks to BW for laying down some rootsy, live music and the beautiful crew at Lomilomi Hana Lima for healing appreciative friends with massage. Then, we went to the kickoff party for EcoStyle Hawaii at Pacific Home on Saturday. Got to see lots of friends and they even had a fashion show showing off some of Mu'umu'u Heaven's latest creations.

Jackie Black at Muumuu Heaven - Nov. 9th

We are thrilled to announce that Jackie Black will be on display in the store starting November 9th as part of our Second Sunday Kailua Artwalk program. There will be an artist's reception on Sunday from 3-5pm. Hope to see you there!

More about the artist:

Jackie has worked as a Honolulu artist since 1968. Her achievements have been recognized through the years both for her watercolor painting as well as design with numerous awards for her commitment to excellence. Included are the premier Pele Awards of the American Advertising Federation of Hawaii, the Ilima Award of the IBCA/Hawaii & The National Summit Awards. Jackie has twice received the Bobbie Segler Award for luminosity in Hawaii Watercolor Society Exhibitions.

Jackie's formal education was from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. It was there that she first discovered her love for the spontaneity of watercolor. Jackie now enjoys painting full time from her studio overlooking Kaneohe Bay.
